Back to Square One: Old-World Food in a New-World Kitchen
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (October, 1992)
Authors: Joyce Eserky Goldstein, Rachel Goldstein, and Evan Goldstein
Average review score:

My favorite cookbook of all time
I have drawn on this book almost exclusively for about six years. Underneath the specific recipies is an approach that has transformed my own cooking. A huge bonus are the wine reccomendations for nearly every dish--including soups, salads, and desserts--that provide a road-map for discovering the pleasures of thoughtful matching. It's not fussy, but chock full of good humor, finesse, and joy.

a must have
I bought this book at Square One a few years ago in SF. A great meal, and I have had the pleasure of making many of the easy top follow recipes in this book. The stories adjacent to the recipes give background and also hints on preparation and substitutions.

The Barbie Doll Years 1959-1996: A Comprehensive Listing & Value Guide of Dolls & Accessories (2nd Ed)
Published in Paperback by Collector Books (July, 1997)
Authors: Patrick C. Olds, Myrazona R. Olds, Partick C. Olds, and Myrazona R. Harris
Average review score:

The best, most thorough value guide you'll find!
This book lists nearly EVERYTHING! And I'm assuming when the third edition comes out, it'll cover the few things missed here. The values are as accurate as any other price guide (i.e. to be taken with a grain of salt), but the best part is having such a completely comprehensive list of not only dolls, but also fashions, accessories, licensed items, even pogs and postcards!

Excellent resource book - a must have for collectors
This is THE one book you MUST have if you collect in the broad Barbie doll family. They are few photos, but there is the most comprehensive listing of every Barbie & Friends you could ever find. When I'm bidding in auctions, this is the book I look to for the REAL value of the item. Get it...or you could overpay on your Barbie items. Highly recommended!!

Battered Love: Marriage, Sex, and Violence in the Hebrew Prophets (Overtures to Biblical Theology)
Published in Paperback by Fortress Press (January, 2003)
Author: Renita J. Weems
Average review score:

God as Wife Abuser
Battered Love is about how the Hebrew Bible prophets portrayed the relationship between Israel and God. Many times the metaphor of God as husband and Israel as wife was used.

Weems points out in a fascinating study, that God was often portrayed as setting up all the rules and that strict obediance of the rules was necessary for people of Israel, the subordinate partner in the divine/human relationship. If the Israelites disobeyed the rules, then God was permitted to beat up Israel. If Israel later returned to God, then God would love Israel again.

Renita Weems explains how a metaphor works and how metaphors are used by people. Furthermore she explains quite lucidly that for many people the human husband represented God, and the wife represented the subordinate partner. Therefore, husbands throughout the centuries have believed that they have permission to beat up their disobedient wives. Renita Weems especially looks at the prophets Ezekiel, Hosea, and Jeremiah to prove her case.

Words do hurt!

A fresh and fruitful guide to reading the Prophets
Prof. Weems has contributed a helpful critique of the social implications inherent in the Prophets' choice of metaphors. This book will alter - for the better - the way you view the Hebrew Prophets, God, and yourself.

Beauty and the Beast: Visions and Revisions of an Old Tale
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (Trd) (April, 1991)
Author: Betsy Hearne
Average review score:

The best resource on versions of 'Beauty and the Beast'
This is by far the best book on the subject of 'Beauty and the Beast' ever written. Betsy Hearne takes an insightful look at the fairy tale and its many versions throughout the centuries. Unfortunately its time span is only from the 1700's to the early 1980's, thus excluding any discussion of the Ron Koslow television series or the 1991 Disney animated film. But even with this, the book is well worth several readings if you are at all interested in studying this 'tale as old as time.'

This book is a valuble resource f
I found this book serveral years ago, and bought it becuae, well, I love Beauty and the Beast (with the possible exception of the Disney verson....) and this was reccomended as one of the better basic resources. It was originally writen as a thesis , so basically it's all that research available without the bother of looking it up yourself. She discusses the shift of the story from the folktales to the novels and other adaptations of today. Unfortunately it was written BEFORE Disney, but I found a review she did of the movie later. It was pretty funny. It has a copy of one of the oldest printed versions (Mme Le Prince du Beaumont) and a transcription of a French folk version as resources at the end. (I wish I could read French.)

Beowulf: A New Verse Translation (Broadview Literary Texts Series)
Published in Paperback by Broadview Press (05 January, 2000)
Author: R. M. Liuzza
Average review score:

This translation makes Beowulf accesible
I didn't expect to enjoy Beowulf. It is very old and very repetitive. However, the very interesting introduction and appendices make Beowulf interesting and relevant to modern readers, as well as easy to understand. There is a lot of supplementary material in this edition that gives Beowulf a context to help make it meaningful. The footnotes were very helpful as well. Overall, I liked it and recomend it to students studying Beowulf.

Accessible and Accurate
RM Liuzza's long-awaited translation of the Old English epic is a wonderful way for people who do not read Old English to get to know this poem. Liuzza preserves much of the feel of Beowulf, from the rhythm to the alliteration. Students of Old English will also find the book a useful tool for checking their own understanding of the poem. The appendices in the back are very useful, and it's a beautiful book besides. I can't reccomend it enough, heck, buy it in hardcover.

The Best of Amish Cooking : Traditional and Contemporary Recipes Adaped from the Kitchens and Pantries of Old Order Amish Cooks
Published in Paperback by Good Books (May, 1996)
Author: Phyllis Pellman Good
Average review score:

The Best Cook Book in My Kitchen
I love this cook book! It's just full of recipes for that wonderful Amish food, and the thing I really love about it is that for the most part, the ingredients are items you probably already have in your kitchen, as opposed to some of the "coffee table" cookbooks you have to travel to France in order to get the ingredients they call for. I wouldn't be without this one, and I've just finished ordering it as a gift. Get this one, you'll love it.

Wonderful accurate cook book with good stories
My neighbor has cooked with some of these recipes for years (she is 76). She was so happy to find these recipes written so that she can give them to her daughter, grand daughters and great grand daughters. The author is an excellant authority on Amish cooking.

Best Stories for Five-Year-Olds

Authors: Enid Blyton and Guy Parker-Rees
Average review score:

Sure to please!
Hi! all,

I grew up with Enid Blyton and it's nice to see her again with my 5 year-old. These stories are a riot and my daughter absolutely loves them. They are also great reads for kids who are just beyond the picture book stage and are looking for big-kid "chapter" books. The book has the look of a chapter book with short stories.

A lot of fun and how much story in 3 pages each!

Enjoy!

Enid Blyton Lives up to his Billing
I read almost all of Blyton's books when I was a child. I amnow a father to a 5-year-old and I was very happy to see the same rushof excitement in my son when I read him this book. The stories contained fully prickle the interest of a 5 year old and Blyton's 30 year writing experience is clearly evident in this book. Make your 5 year old happy buy this book!

betty crocker's old fashioned cookbook
THIS COOKBOOK IS A WORTHWHILE INVESTMENT. THE RECIPES ARE EASY TO FOLLOW AND THE COORDINATING PICTURES ARE A HELP WHEN PRESENTATION IS IMPORTANT! I AM A LIBRARIAN AND WOULD BE REMISS IF I DID NOT MENTION THAT THE BINDING DOES NOT WEAR WELL WITH AGE. THE COOKBOOK IS SO RELIABLE, THAT REPAIRING THE BINDING IS WORTH THE TIME AND REPLACING THE BOOK WITH THE SAME ONE IS A CONSIDERATION.

Excellent easy to follow recipes with beautiful pictures.
I have owned this cookbook since it first came out and every recipe I have tried has come out fabulously. I would highly reccomend this book to anyone who enjoys cooking.

Bible History Commentary: Old Testament
Published in Hardcover by Wels Board for Parish (January, 1981)
Author: Werner H. Franzmann
Average review score:

A Sunday School teacher's best reference after the Bible.
If you teach Sunday School, Franzman should be required reading, right after the Scriptures. He touches on questions all children ask, and clarifies passages that confuse even adults. I used him to teach small children,(4-5 years old), medium sized children,(4th & 5th grade), and to prove my point in discussions with adults. The writing style is easy to read and comprehend. He never talks down, but instead seeks to clarify any passages that might need explanation. In preparing for your Bible lesson, he lays an essential groundwork in understanding even the most vague passages. I cannot recommend this highly enough.

Great resource for teachers of Bible History
Werner Franzmann, theologian, professor, and pastor of the Wisconsin Lutheran Synod, was commissioned to write a Bible History Commentary for use by Sunday School teachers. If you, like me, teach Sunday school and/or Adult Bible classes, this two-volume set is a precious resource of Old Testament stories. Networking with fellow teachers, there is always an eye kept open for good resources. This set is written in plain, clear, concise English. It also makes a great reference work for the budding Church library.
